Whites are crowned division three champs

Their victory over Annaghmore last Saturday night clinched the Division Three title.

‘Guns ‘n’ Roses’ topped the singles chart with ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’ and Michael Jackson released his masterpiece ‘Man in the Mirror’ in the year which last saw silverware being brought back to the Freecrow club at senior level which was 1988.

Since then the Whites have bobbed between the second and third flights, but the youngsters who have been brought through the ranks by the unsung heroes like Brian McCabrey may be ready to compete with a level of consistency.

Traditionally, as with a lot of town clubs, the transition between youth and senior teams can be fraught with difficulty.

But this particular group of St Peter’s youngsters who have enjoyed on-field tuition from old hands like David Wilson and Paul Brady look to be more focused than Whites teams before them, and some have the extra benefit of county coaching on their CV.

This St Peter’s success has been built on years of constructed coaching, allied with a lot of work on the development front which has seen a state of the art youth and community hall which can accommodate both sporting and entertainment events.

St Peter’s have been rewarded for their consistency this season.

Their early season form saw them remain unbeaten for a long period and even a mid-season blip was overcome when form was recovered before a period of crucial end of season games.

Next season, the Whites will welcome the big crowds back to Freecrow when they renew derby rivalry with Clan na Gael.

The second flight will be a lot more competitive in 2012, but if the veterans can stick around to encourage the youngsters for another year, St Peter’s can at least consolidate their place in Division Two.
