The Mayor, Cllr Margaret Tolerton and Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, Alderman Paul Porter, visited Moira recently where one of the City’s summer schemes is taking place, half-way through this special year for Lisburn.

The Mayor said: “It is good to get out and about during the summer holidays and the children attending the Moira summer scheme were having a great time playing hockey in the playground. Teamwork, new skills and keeping active are very important skills for each of us to develop and continue to develop and everyone looked like they were having a great time.

“Of course this year we are lucky enough to take advantage of the great outdoors with the marvellous weather, which has been fantastic for various sporting events that have taken place over the summer. I would like to extend my thanks to Moira Primary School for the use of its facilities for this summer scheme,” she added.

Alderman Paul Porter said: “We are about half-way through our programme of activities which have been developed and expanded in this our designated European City of Sport year. We have enjoyed all varieties of sport including judo, swimming, boccia, badminton, tennis, athletics, football and dedicated activity days have taken place in the City to motivate local people, whatever their age or ability, to try something new. Whether events have been festivals, championships or galas, whether small-scale or large, our onus has been to spread the word about what is on offer in the sporting arena in the City of Lisburn.

“The Council has invested significantly in sporting and recreational opportunities for our citizens and whether this is having fun in one of our play parks, going to the GymTech, taking a swimming class or signing up for tennis lessons the principle is to have fun and do something you enjoy,” he said.

Highlights to date have included: NI Boccia Championships, The Judo Academy Festival, Launch of Park Run at Wallace Park, NI Special Schools Sports Day, Lisburn Primary Schools Cross Country at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Senior Citizens Tea Dance and Networking Event, Multi Sports Easter Camp, World Physical Activity Day, timetable of events citywide to celebrate World Physical Activity Day, Special Olympics Regional Badminton Finals at the Racquets Club, Lisburn Junior Invitation League’s Finals at Ballymacoss Playing Fields, Lisburn Primary Schools Tag Rugby at the LeisurePlex.
