Riada started the strongly and could have been in front early on but for some good work from the Magherafelt Reds goalkeeper who denied both Mullaghan and Christie on several occasions.
The Reds threatened near the end of the half but struggled to carve out any real opportunities with Brownlow and Smyth solid at the back for Riada. The score remained goalless at half time. Riada came out fast at the start of the second period and were two goals to the good inside five minutes due to a left footed strike from Johnny Wildsmith and a Mullaghan shot into the bottom corner.
Riada went 3-0 up midway through the second half when a long ball saw Mullaghan raceagainst The Reds goalkeeper with the Riada man poking the ball past the onrushing keeper into an empty net. The Reds responded with two quickfire goals before Riada put the game to bed ten minutes from time when some good work by McCook resulted in his cross hitting a Magherafelt Reds arm. McCook duely dispatched the penalty leaving the final score 4-2 in favour of the home side.
Riada manager Richard Mooney commented: “We wern’t really at it in the first period and I asked the lads at half time for a big improvement in the second half which I got immediately so that was pleasing. We’re happy with the start we’ve made picking up seven points from a possible nine, we’d have taken that from those three games. We’ll have to be at it from the outset on Saturday as we have a very tough away game against the Heights who have also started strong and have signed some good players.”
