Looking back... Savings Committee meets in Glengormley

Chairman Mr R.J Simms welcomed Mr B.F Proudfoot, publicity officer of Ulster Savings Committee.

The chairman paid tribute to the loyal savings workers for their efforts during the past year.

He said that savings locally had increased from £29,000 to £44,000 during the past 12 months thanks to growing interest in the Mossley area, according to a report in the East Antrim Times.

Members discussed the possibility of the establishment of a savings bank in Glengormley.

A request for the siting of a sub Post Office in Mossley was backed by the group’s sub-committee.

It was announced that there were plans to hold a savings rally and concert in the Barron Hall.

The guest speaker reminded that Ulster Savings Certificates were tax-free. These were introduced in 1922 to raise funds for capital projects and were popular during World War II when savings groups were established in factories, offices and schools to support the war effort.
