Children dice with death on railway lines

It was happening on the stretch of line between William Street and Bell’s Row.

The youngsters had introduced a frightening game of daring each other to stand in front of oncoming trains.

The lack of adequate security fencing along the track was being held responsible for encouraging the youngsters to stray onto the line.

Councillor Malachy Magurran warned: “This shortcoming could amount to a serious tragedy which no amount of well intended publicity will overcome.”

Meanwhile a growing number of adults were using the same stretch of track as a short cut from the town centre to the Kilwilkie estate - at night time as well as day.
