Portrush traveled to Antrim on Saturday for an important Senior One league fixture.

Having won against the Antrim side in their first meeting back at the start of the season, Portrush felt confident it was a game to put three points on the board but an unpredictable Antrim squad made their mark on the match.

From the start Antrim were able to take their chances and within the first few minutes Portrush had a short corner to defend. Antrim continued to attack and press high up the pitch Portrush were fast on the counter attacks and came close to taking the lead on a few occasions.

Unfortunately for the Ports, Antrim were the first to make an impact on the game, as the Antrim player ran through Brent Smith was able to make a courages tackle putting the ball out of play. However, for the tackle the umpire awarded a penalty flick which Antrim were able to convert.

Now Portrush were behind and under pressure, they were able to make their impact on the game not long after the first goal when Portrush were on the counterattack. With great play through the midfield from Leon Smith and John Dillon, Aaron Kerr was found in the circle and he deflected the ball into the Antrim goal making it 1-1.

With the match back on level pegging, both teams were fighting hard to find the next goal and as the first half began to draw to a close no team could take the lead. The Portrush defence stayed solid at the back and the strikers caused the Antrim defence problems.

After the halftime break the game began to settle briefly before Antrim made another impact on the match. They won another short corner and the Antrim shot was saved by a Portrush foot on the line. Another penalty flick was converted for Antrim to take the lead at 2-1.

Throughout the second half Portrush continued to fight to get back in the game but it was Antrim who were able to find the Portrush goal two more times to take the win of 4-1.

This was another disappointing game for Portrush but the squad will not be discouraged by this result and will look to achieve more points over the last three games of the season.

This week Portrush will play North Down at the Quay Road playing fields in Ballycastle.
