Lynn sails to victory in Lifeboat event

A FIELD of 180 competitors braved the elements at Ballymena Golf Club on the final day of July in the Royal National Lifeboat Institution charity competition and some of the field faced conditions in which lifeboats wouldn't have looked out of place!

The top card came from an afternoon player, Jonathan Lynn, who, playing off eight, returned 42 points.

An outward nine holes of three over gross for 19 points was added to on the way home with eight pars and a birdie at 13 which yielded a further 23.

The next three positions were all attained with a score of 41 points and Derek Francey (15) took second place by virtue of a better last six hole score of 14 against David Mulholland’s 13.

He bolstered a front nine score of four over for 21 points with a further 20 but it could have been better as he had a ‘ding’ on the shortish par four 13th. Against that, however, a birdie on the last hole repaired some of the damage and was very vital on countback.

Mulholland (12) was two over after three but his next dropped shot wasn’t until the ninth, by which stage he had accumulated 21 points.

Into the back nine with two bogeys, he then had five pars only to register a six on the 17th but a par on the final hole was enough for a further 20 points.

The third 41-point card came from nine-handicapper WIlliam Tuff who played the first nine holes in one under gross for an impressive total of 23 points. Alas, the second nine was not so spectacular and included a non-score on the 12th but to his credit, he played the last six holes in level par, adding a further 18 points.

Gary Black was fifth, with 40 points. The five-handicapper made his intentions known early with a birdie at the first and he was level par after nine. His good form continued into the back nine with four pars on the trot and his final five holes were two pars, two bogeys plus a birdie on the par three 16th.

The final nett prize went to Jonathan Law (11) who also had 40 points but a no-score at the par three 14th proved costly, as did a double bogey, bogey finish.

Best gross was won by Sean McGarry who played the course in level par, having had five pars, two bogeys and two birdies on the front nine. The back nine was equally as good with seven pars and a birdie at 11, only to drop a shot on the final hole.

The charity competition for Kollegal was won by John A Jamieson who, off a five-handicap, returned a level par gross round for 41 points. In total he had eight pars, five bogeys and five birdies.

Second place went to David Chambers (16) who amassed 40 points, 22 of them on the front nine.

The final nett prize was won by Lawrence Kerr (12) who posted 39 points, including a second nine of 22 points.

The best gross came from Jordan Lemon (6) who was out in one over and in on two over.

The NI Hospice charity competition on August 1 resulted in a single point win for 13-handicapper Cormac McQuillan who amassed 42 points - despite failing to score at the final hole.

A superb opening nine hole total of 23 points sent him on his way to what could have been an unassailable total but a double bogey at 11 plus that final hole failure curtailed his progress.

Second place was taken by club captain John Brown (11) who racked up 41 points. 22 of them in the second nine which he played in two over gross, finishing his round with a birdie.

The third nett prize was won by Brian Scullion, a three-handicapper from Lurgan Golf Club, who scored a total of 39 points.

The ladies’ prize was won by Jill Black who, off a 10-handicap, posted 36 points. A front nine of 17 points contained a non-score at the sixth, after having four pars in the opening five holes.

The back nine resulted in Jill playing within her handicap with five pars and four single bogeys, which converted into 19 more points.
