The talented thrower claimed the Weigh Inn Irish Open at the weekend, in Omagh, in what some people are saying is the biggest darts event in Ireland this summer and the quality on show was perhaps the best anyone will see this year.

For the first time in the highly acclaimed competitions history Gurney got his hands on the title.

From the early rounds it was clear that a special performance would be required to claim the title.

Darts fans then were delighted that the qualifiers and the decider on Sunday evening produced some stunning throwing, high scoring, emotion and excitement.

Over 75 professionals and the top local throwers went toe to toe on the oche over three intense days and it was the popular local professional who got his hands on the Weigh Inn Irish Open title.

“This is special for me, this is one I have tried to win now since it started,” stated Gurney.

“I come here every Monday night, this is like home to me, I think the Weigh Inn is a great place, a great venue and the Donnelly’s (Mickey and Neechy) have been great for darts. Winning the Irish Open against such a great opponent in Colin (McGarry) was a great experience too, me and Colin have had some great battles and I knew I would have to be at my best if I was to beat him.

“Thankfully I got the better of him on Sunday night, while I took the open it was darts that was the winner here in Omagh.”

Gurney, who is in his second year on the PDC circuit, powered to the crown beating Larne’s Colin McGarry 7-3 in a high scoring final full of drama and stunning finishes.

Despite the 7-3 scoreline this decider was closer than that, McGarry had several chances to win legs seven and eight but failed to find the darts as Gurney kept his cool, took time to refocus and was consistently good.

Gurney, who will now be heading to Germany aiming to qualify for the Grand Prix later in the year, had produced some monster darts over the weekend.

Gurney is a regular at the Omagh venue and was delighted to finally secure the prestigious title having come through what many described as the group of death in the early stages.

There was plenty of silverware on offer during the entertaining weekend with Dwayne McEvoy taking the new consolation cup, while Campbell Jackson claimed the Weigh Inn Classic accolade.
