Golf's Ryder Cup - Kilrea Manor style!

GOLF lovers in Kilrea are getting into the swing of the Ryder Cup this weekend - by staging their very own version of the sport’s top competition.

Kilrea Manor Golf Club is staging an event to mirror the illustrious competition to mirror that being fought out between the Europeans and Americans at Celtic Manor in Wales.

Kilrea’s Ryder Cup takes place on Sunday 3 October from 7.30am and two teams of 12 will battle it out.

The American side consists of those members who have ever visited the USA and they will be vying with the European outfit to lift a replica of the trophy.

Dessie Gray will be captaining the Europeans while Harry Boyle will take charge of the Americans.

“The idea was suggested as a joke originally,” Harry - last year’s Club captain - told Times Sport.

“But it grew and grew and we decided to do it for a laugh after a long season.

“The buzz is really good at the minute and the banter is flowing, everyone is really looking forward to it.”

As well as the replica trophy, both teams will wear special polo shirts and the flags of both sides will flutter proudly.

Seamus Maguire will be master of ceremonies on the day and also the referee.

“Anyone who wants to come along on the day will be made very welcome, particularly the WAGs,” said Harry.

“Without them behind us we wouldn’t be able to play golf - as we wouldn’t be allowed!

“But seriously, it will be a great day’s craic for all those involved.”

As is the case with the Ryder Cup, the winning captain could be set for a drenching by being thrown into a pond.

But Harry says he’s a strong swimmer so has no qualms about getting wet.

Harry added that he isn’t sure if his opposite number can swim but said that won’t be an issue as Dessie will be on dry land come Sunday afternoon.

After the competition on the day, the players and their WAGs will enjoy some lunch and take in the Ryder Cup.
