Future looks very bright as young stars are shining

Peter Cummins has enjoyed considerable success over the last few years and in the process lifted back-to-back Leinster Provincial titles.

This year has opened for him in similar fashion and a brilliant round of 66, off four, meant 44pts and victory. He dropped a shot at the sixth, but this was his only slip and birdies at the fourth, fifth, ninth, 12th and 18th made up his score. One of his playing partners was his father Timmy, and there must have been occasions during the round when Timmy felt his course record 63, shot 24 years ago, was under serious threat. Congratulations to Peter on his best ever round and no doubt there is plenty more of that to come.

Young Caolan McCann began with a pair of bogeys but went on to shoot a gross 68 for 40pts, off two, and take second place. A birdie at the eighth helped but what really boosted him were eagles at the long fourth and 15th holes. This meant it took him just 11 shots to play the three par five holes.

Third place went to Alan Woods with 39pts off 15. Despite having no fewer than four double bogeys on his card, eight nett birdies were sufficient to lift him into the prizes.

No-one is currently playing more impressive golf in the club than Canice McGivern. In his 18 competitive rounds since the season began, he has played below his handicap onnine occasions, a 50% success rate. He was at it again on Saturday when he took fourth place with 38pts, off eight.

Playing alongside Caolan McCann was another of the club’s younger brigade, Stephen McCabrey, and he lifted the best gross prize with 35 gross pts. He will be delighted with his three twos, which came at the second, 12th and 17th holes, he will be kicking himself for a triple bogey at the sixth.

The low section went to Richard Budd with 38pts, off 10, the highlights being birdies at the second and fourth. Just edged out of the prizes on the back nine was Andrew Cummins.

Kevin Carabine had a very modest 13pts on the front nine, but 22pts on the way back saw him lift the middle section with just 35pts. Nevan Lavery and Gary Totten had a similar total but missed out on the prizes.

Adrian Collins took the high section with 38pts, off 23, narrowly beating Joe McGlone on 37pts.
