LIAM Gallagher was the clear winner of the McGildowney Cup on Saturday at Ballycastle with a superb nine under par 62 playing off a handicap of 13.
A birdie two are the 3rd hole sent him on his way to an outward 38 and another birdie at the 11th helped him home with 37 blows. In second place Simon Lynn (7) had a level par back nine of 35 to add to his 37 on the outward nine and finish with a fine nett 65.
In Section 1 (0-12) Niall McGarry (11) came top with a nett 65 while in Section 2 (13-16) Kieran Kelly (14) recorded a nett 66 as did Kevin Blaney (20) to pick up the Section 3 prize.
The first gross prize was won by Patrick Dallat Jnr with a 72 while Rory Gallagher pipped John Higgins Jnr and Mel Carleton for the 2nd prize with a 74.
The Sunday Stableford was in aid of the Marie Curie Charity and during the weekend members contributed over £300 to this worthy cause. Mark Molloy (27) came 1st on Sunday with 41 points in the difficult conditions just ahead of Paul McCloskey (16) also on 41 points, with Ciaran McFarlane in 3rd on 40 points.
Ciaran would not have been too disappointed with his 3rd place as it included a hole-in-one at the 3rd hole.
In conjunction with the Marie Curie Competition there was a longest drive competition at the 4th hole on both days with a nearest the pin on the 17th. On Saturday Paul McCloskey had the longest drive while Liam McLaughlin was nearest the pin. On Sunday David Morgan was the biggest hitter while Edgar Dornan was nearest the pin.
Next Saturday sees the qualifying for this year’s Silver Mounted Trophy with the top 32 pairs going through to the knockout stages, the top qualifying pair will also go through to the regional GUI Centenary Competition at Galgorm Castle on 23rd June.
Members are again reminded that the first round matches in the Valencia, Tieve Tara and Culfeightrin must be completed by Friday 10th May to ensure the competitions are ready for Finals Night on Friday 28th June.
