Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern says he hopes his outstanding goalkeeping performance in the 1-0 defeat by Germany will be enough to help his side through to the last 16 of Euro 2016.

McGovern produced a series of outstanding saves to boost his side’s goal difference and their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages.

“If it’s good enough to get us through I’ll be immensely proud of this performance but if not it will be very disappointing,” said McGovern.

“I was busy today and we were under a lot of pressure. We knew the goal difference was crucial and it was important to keep the score down,” he added.

McGovern’s performance rekindled memories of his stunning efforts in 1999, when he won the Blast Tournament for a Milk Cup select team in California, USA, saving all penalties from a strong junior Arsenal side.
