Sky Blues continue to be predictably unpredictable!

I have to admit I left Seaview on Saturday smiling from ear to ear.

But it wasn’t just the drama of Ballymena United’s last-gasp win as Seaview which amused me as much as the absurd nature of football at times.

Be honest now, after the carnage of the previous week’s debacle against Glenavon, would you have given Ballymena pup’s chance as they travelled to the Shore Road, where Crusaders hadn’t lost a domestic match in any competition since April 2012.

But how many times have we seen a team’s long, unbeaten sequence end in a match when it was least expected?

I’ll level with you - there were times in the second half when, with United 1-0 and under pressure, it seemed to me that another defeat looked in the offing.

But then came that seemingly rare commodity as far as Ballymena are concerned - a stroke of good fortune. If anyone wants to rack their brains and think of the last time the Sky Blues benefitted from a deflected shot which wrong-footed the opposition keeper, tear away - there certainly ain’t one leaping to my mind!

And then came the decisive blow - and in keeping with the general theme of this piece, it was a classic ‘zero to hero’ story.

Gary Liggett’s abject display before being ‘hooked’ at the interval against Glenavon last week unsurprisingly earned him a spot on the bench but, having already teed up Shane Dolan for the equaliser, the much-maligned striker fired home a sumptuous angled drive for a famous winner - not exactly the type of finish associated with a striker low on confidence.

For all the criticism he attracts - United fans struggle to warm to his languid style - Liggett’s goalscoring record since his January switch from Lisburn Distillery is actually pretty decent. He averages a goal every three games or so for Ballymena and over the course of a season, that would make for a healthy total.

No-one is going to kid themselves that Ballymena went to Seaview and dominated the game - at times it was backs-to-the-wall and it took crucial interventions from keeper Dwayne Nelson and the woodwork to prevent the Crues from turning the screw.

But as an antidote to the disaster which befell United seven days earlier, it was a very welcome tonic for the fans who kept faith in their team
