‘I think we could go places’ - Hargan

EGLINTON’S Sean Hargan believes his side can continue to improve, after he watched them defeat favourites Ardmore, to claim the City Cup, on Friday night.

The Villagers’ boss saw Sean Whoriskey open the scoring, before Peter Doherty netted from the spot and Johnny Hume gave his side a 3-0 lead, before Gareth Browne scored a consolation goal for Ardmore.

Hargan feels the victory could be the start of something special for Eglinton, however he knows that next season is going to be just as tough.

“I haven’t really thought about next season yet, but we have a good side at Eglinton and I think we could go places,” insisted Hargan.

“I always believed in the players and as I said before the game I believed that we could beat anybody on our day.

“We have a good side, who have gelled well over the last ten weeks and we have won our last ten games and only conceded three goals, so we are a good side.”

Eglinton have a number of young talented players with both senior club’s Derry City and Institute keeping an eye on them and because of that Hargan is worried his young squad will start to be broken up.

“We have a few cracking players and I think Derry City and Institute have been looking at our goalkeeper Joe Robertson, he’s 19-years-old and he has got great potential to go on and do better things.

“The average age of our team is around 21-22 and a lot of them could play at a higher standard.”

With both Ardmore and Caw booking their place in the Premier Division for the 2012/13 season, Hargan knows his side will start as one of the favourites to claim the First Division title next season, however he isn’t even thinking about that yet.

“I hope we can get into the Premier Division, but we’ll just take it as it comes,” he said.

“We’ll enjoy winning the City Cup and then get pre-season started four or five weeks before it starts.”

Hargan, who is in his first year in management, thinks this season’s First Division has been more competitive than the Premier Division.

“I believe the First Division this year was better than the Premier,” he added.

“There are four teams in the First Division who could easily play in the Premier Division, Ardmore, Caw, Ballykelly and ourselves all play good football, so credit to Ardmore where they have got this year, they have won the league, Sentinel Cup and made it to two finals and that’s an unbelievable achievement.”
