Balnamore’s Ashleigh grabs league glory with Glentoran Belfast United

A 19-year-old from Balnamore has been celebrating league success with the Glentoran Belfast United team which won the Northern Ireland Women’s Football Association Premier League last week.

Ashleigh McKinnon(pictured right) is the netminder for the Oval side which also won the league title last year.

She told the Times she first got interested in football by playing for her school side at Ballymoney High before she went to Ballymoney Ladies and on to Moyola before making the move to Glentoran.

And the young football star is currently also training with the Northern Ireland ladies’ squad.

An interest in football runs in her family and her brother Richard (23) is also known in local football circles.

And there is also a goalkeeping pedigree in her family circle as her cousin James Elder does nets for Balnamore FC.

Ashleigh’s ambitions are to get involved in football coaching and also to make a name for herself with Northern Ireland.

Said Ashleigh: “I’m really enjoying my football with Glentoran at the moment.”

And why not? as another title has come to the Glens.
