Final day flourish helps Mervyn to league win

A final round of 24 points gave Mervyn Hewitt (22) double delight in the Lisburn GC Winter League.

He finished in top spot in both Section Three and overall with a fantastic aggregate score of 94.

Gavin Hawkins (13) also scored an impressive 24 points on the final day and duly won Section Two.

Over 100 competitors enjoyed the better weather that last Saturday brought with 30 golfers scoring 20 points or more - no mean feat over nine holes.

Mervyn had two four pointers thanks to a birdie three at the third followed by a par four at the fifth

Chris Warwick (23) had a birdie three at the fifth for a five pointer to secure second place from John Patterson (22) after both finished on 22.

Gavin had back to back birdies at the third and fourth followed by another at the ninth on his way towards 24 points.

He had three points to spare over Ivor Walker (13) with Mark Jamieson (19) third on 20.

Both Philip Sanaghan (12) and Noel Robinson (12) played the front nine in 37 for 23 points. Noel had the better score until he ran up a six at the eighth to lose out on count-back. Glenn Waring (12) was third on 22.

Aggregate scores

Ian Sayers continued his good form to score 21 points and topped Section One with 89 points.

Philip Sanaghan and Stephen Shaw finished three points in arrears.

Gavin Hawkins secured top place in Section Two with 93 points, two ahead of Colin Jeffers and three ahead of Stephen Wilkinson.

Mervyn Hewitt’s 94 was a clear winner of Section Three with Chris Warwick 2nd on 89

one point ahead of William Dougherty.

The leaders will represent the club at Portstewart in the Tri Club Winter League competition.

Lisburn are the holders after winning the trophy at Clandeboye last year.
