Feast of Easter action at Raceway

THE inclement weather conditions failed to dampen spirits at Ballymena Raceway over the Easter weekend where the drivers battled against the elements to provide a hectic session of short oval action.

It was a memorable weekend for Stock Rod racer Raymond Harper who proved unstoppable in his rapid Vauxhall Corsa. Harper, the current British and Irish Champion, clinched the Greer’s of Antrim sponsored Yokohama Tyres title on Good Friday and followed that up with a dominant win in the Gilmore Engineering backed Irish Open Championship the following evening.

Cullybackey’s Frankie Lynn and Micky McFall from Craigywarren followed Harper home in the action packed Yokohama final, with Antrim’s Stephen McCready and Scottish visitor Chris Lattka the place men on Saturday evening.

On a weekend when the Stock Rod class took centre stage it was perhaps inevitable that former Stock Rod World Champion Glenn Bell would leave his mark on proceedings as well with a well taken heat and final double in the latest National Hot Rod World Qualifying round on Good Friday.

BriSCA F2 Track Champion Conor Hughes was another driver celebrating a double win over the weekend, with other final wins going the way of Aidan McFerran in the Junior Rods and Anthony McIvor in the Saloon Stock Cars.

In the Group Two Lightning Rod class the action was as close as ever, with their six races producing five different winners over the weekend. Stewart Nicholl claimed the silverware on Good Friday, before Adrian Hillis collected the final honours on Easter Saturday.

The weekend action was rounded off by the Open Hot Rods where Davy Gurney clinched the Easter Trophy in his Peugeot 205.
