A five formula short oval racing spectacular is set to thrill the local fans at Aghadowey Oval on Easter Monday afternoon.
Topping the programme is the 2016 Irish Masters for the Stock Rods, which should prove to be a very competitive title race. Defending Champion Chris ‘Gunner’ Lattka from Falkirk in Scotland has already signalled his intention to be on the grid, and a repeat victory is easily within the capabilities of the five times former World Champion.
The local stars will be keen to wrestle the Irish Open crown from Lattka’s grasp, and expect National Champion Derek McMillan (Kells) and Irish Champion Jonny Cardwell (Ballinderry) to lead the Ulster charge, ably assisted by Ballymena veteran Victor McAfee, the current Best in Britain title holder.
Waringstown’s Ben McCully was the final winner last time the formula raced at Aghadowey earlier this month, and he could well be another threat to the favourites. Former Scottish Champion Jonathan Lattka is another top driver making the trip across the Irish Sea, whilst a number from Tipperary Raceway are expected to boost the ranks.
The fastest cars on the ovals, the sophisticated National Hot Rods, will also be in action in the latest round of the closely contested PC Paints & Components (Ballymoney) Ltd World Series NI. With all eyes on qualification for the coveted World Championship at Ipswich in July, Portadown’s Mark Heatrick currently tops the points chart, chased hard by European Champion Adam Hylands, also from Portadown.
National Champion Gary Woolsey and former World title holder Glenn Bell will be others in contention, with young Ballymena based stars Carl Sloan and Jaimie McCurdy also ones to watch. Dungannon aces Derek and Keith Martin are others who will be hoping for a victory, as an entry of upwards of 20 of the expensive machines are expected to race at breakneck speed around the raceway.
Also in action will be the single-seater Superstox, with Irish Champion Denver Grattan the star attraction, as well as the Thunder Rods and the young stars of tomorrow in the Ninja Karts.
The first race of the meeting, sponsored by Murrays of Randalstown, leaves the grid at 2pm. Further details at dmcracepromotions.com.
