Denton bags PB and third spot in marathon

Chris Denton ran a PB time of 2:47:58 to finish third in the Newry City Marathon on Sunday.

Alistair Shaw ran 3:13:50 on the second leg of his summer challenge in aid of Pink Ladies Breast Cancer Support Group and Janeen McGregor 3:53:29.

Richard Turkington 2:38:32 and Niamh Crowe 3:21:43 were the major prize winners.

The Half Marathon was won by Martin Quinn in 1:09:39 with Caitriona Jennings winning the ladies race in 1:15:26.

Springwell’s Hugh Boyle won the MO55 age category in 1:23:25 with Jim Breen second in 1:26:07, Christopher Millar 1:27:17 and Nicola Frizelle 1:39:00.

Springwell Runners travelled across the water on Saturday for the Stranraer Half Marathon.

Conditions were warm but a fresh breeze helped keep the runners cool.

Kerry Liam Wilson led the field home in 1:12:55 with Karena Carden taking the ladies prize in 1:32:28.

Thomas Moore was the first Springwell Runner home in 1:28:38 (3rd MO40) closely followed by Gerard Mullan 1:28:42, Richard Crown 1:28:49, James McMullan 1:29:56 (3rd MO50), Mark Henderson 1:38:52, Kenny Coulter 1:39:53, Barry McCluskey 1:45:28, Katherine Woods :50:58, Heather O’Neill 2:00:37, Rebecca Clarke 2:08:42, Caroline Taylor 2:10:15, Debbie Tutty 2:14:34, Kenny Bacon 2:17:33, Fiona Walls 2:18:38, and Davy Patterson who was taking it easy after a recent injury 2:18:40.

The men’s team (Thomas Moore, Gerard Mullan and Richard Crown) finished third and the ladies team ( Katherine Woods, Heather O’Neill and Rebecca Clarke) finished second.

Sperrin Harriers Stunnerz in Runnerz

The first Sperrin Harriers Stunnerz in Runnerz 5 mile ladies race took place on Saturday in Magherafelt. The race was won by Cathy McCourt in 29:45.

Springwell had four ladies at the event. Caroline Irwin was first home in 35:41 followed by Carol McIlvar, Alison McAllister 39:32 (PB) and Angela Calderwood 45:10 (PB).

The third meeting in the Edwards & Co Super 5 series took place at the Antrim Forum on Thursday evening.

Natasha Simmons and Lauren O’Doherty competed in the Girls under 11 age group.

Natasha 150m 24.08, 1200m 5.13.59 and long jump 2.55m. Lauren 150m 27.40, long jump 1.84m.

Sally Brown ran 27.92 in the Girls U20 200m.
