CYCLING: Greenisland man Harkens sweeps the board

Ulster Hill Climb Champion Stephen Harkens was presented with Team Madigan’s most prestigious trophy the - Wright Family Cup at the Club’s 2012 Presentation Dinner, having won the Club Best All-Rounder competition for the second year in succession.

Greenisland man Harkens also won the Veterans’ Best All-Rounder Cup, the Veterans’ Age Standard, the Hill Climbs Trophy, and the Tony Purnell Cup for being the first Madigan rider home in the tough 55-mile Madigan Grand Prix Open in August. As well as this, he won personal best time-trial medals: PB for 10-mile, 21.07; PB for 25-mile, 54.14; sub four-hour medal 100-mile, 3.59.45. And he topped it all off with a club record gold medal for the 100-mile time-trial, 3.59.45 It was an outstanding year for Harkens and reward for all the hundreds of hours of training he put in throughout the year.

he thanked the club and its officials for providing such a comprehensive range of races, and offered his support and training to the younger members of the club and members who wish to compete in open races next year.

Team Madigan secretary, Davy Ross, thanked club president Mr Ronnie McKeegan and his wife Averil of Madigan Cycles on behalf of the club’s 80 members for their support which has completed its 24th year. He also thanked Ian Johnston (time keeper / photo finish), and chairman Steven Stewart and his wife Glenda. Mr Ronnie McKeegan thanked all the riders and officials for their hard work throughout the year.
