Cup double for villagers

And near neighbours Lurgan are also chasing a cup semi-final place.

First up for the villagers on Saturday - 12 noon start - is a quarter-final tie in the Challenge Cup against Lisburn at Wallace Park.

It’s the venue were Waringstown won the final last season and this year they have already been successful on the same ground.

“We won quite comfortably there on a poor wicket but Lisburn are a good side and with their overseas player finding form it could be a difficult game,” said village skipper Kyle McCallan.

The cup holders have been in prime form this season and will be keen to extend their unbeaten run.

“We have been playing well although we didn’t play particularly well last week against Brigade.” said Kyle. “It was as poor as I can remember in the field but we showed a lot of spirit and were delighted by the result.”

Waringstown travel to Brigade again on Sunday for a quarter-final game in the Ulster Cup.

“This should be another ding-dong game,” said Kyle. “They were shell shocked last weekend and will have a point to prove this week.”

The North West side were put to the sword last week by an amazing innings from Waringstown professional Glen Addicot who hit ten sixes in a match winning century.

“It’s been a frustrating time for Glen who hasn’t maybe got the opportunities to show his talent as we’ve been playing so well this season and winning games by convincing margins,” said Kyle.

“He got his chance to show what he’s capable of and certainly delivered in some style.”

Both Kris Lyness and Andrew Cousins are unavailable for Waringstown this weekend.

Lurgan also have a chance of reaching the last four of the Challange Cup.

They are at home to Muckamore and will be confident of going through to the next stage.

Both sides are in section one which Lurgan lead with four wins out of four played.

Muckamore have won two of their five league games and have already been beaten by Lurgan earlier in the season.

The other semi-finals in the competition see CSNI taking on Instonians and Downpatrick against North Down.
