Carrick eight points adrift at bottom of table

Carrickfergus Cricket Club’s Premier League survival hopes suffered another serious setback on Sunday when they lost at second-bottom Lisburn. They now find themselves eight points adrift at the bottom of the table.

The home side batted first, and fine opening spells from Ryan Eagleson and Anthony Martin reduced them to 24 for three after 12 overs.

However, skipper David Simpson and Greg Thompson then revived their fortunes with an 85-run partnership for the fourth wicket, before Holmes had Thompson caught for exactly 50.

Waller and Simpson added a further 40 runs, with the Lisburn captain also reaching his 50 before a furry of wickets saw both batsmen dismissed as two further wickets fell to leave Lisburn in a less comfortable position at 159 for eight.

A vital unbroken partnership between Johnny Bell and Richard Simpson then added 42 runs to leave Lisburn with a more respectable 201 for 8 at the end of their 50 overs.

After losing a wicket in the second over, Jamie Holmes and Michael Gilmour gave Carrick hope with a superb display of attacking strokeplay. After 16 overs they had taken their side to 89 for one, before Brown bowled Gilmour for 46. His brilliant innings, scored off just 41 balls, contained eight fours.

Skipper Ross Gelderbloem was adjudged lbw soon afterwards, and with the score just past the hundred mark, Holmes’ fine innings came to an end when he was bowled by Thompson for 43.

Carrick needed 98 runs in 28 overs with six wickets remaining when Ryan Eagleson joined Alex Haggan at the wicket, the pair added another 31 runs when Haggan was caught for 19.

Leading batsman Mikey Taiaroa, who had suffered an injury in the field then came to the wicket, but was only able to watch as wickets tumbled at the other end. Lisburn spinner van der Merwe reduced Carrick to 146 for nine and number 11 batsman Anthony Martin was the only one able to offer Tairoa any real support. In the end it proved just too much for the last-wicket pair and he was caught behind with Carrick still 39 runs behind, and Taiaroa stranded on 17.
