Christie wins Irish title at Ballymena Raceway

Alistair Christie is the Euro Stock Irish Champion for 2015 after a polished performance from the Ballymoney based racer in their title showdown at Ballymena Raceway on Friday evening.

Christie began his bid for glory on the second row of the grid and it was pole sitter Johnny McCloy from Garvagh who scampered away into an early lead. Christie gradually eased up onto the back bumper of the leader’s Ford Puma however and began to increase the pressure as the race progressed.

Christie tracked the leader and his constant pressure finally told when McCloy left a gap on the inside on lap 13. Christie took full advantage and began to pull away while McCloy fell back in to the clutches of Aaron McMullan from Castlerock.

Christie expertly picked his way through the backmarkers over the closing stages to take the title for the first time in his immaculate Vauxhall Astra, while McMullan slipped His Honda Civic through into second before the end, with McCloy forced to settle for third.

In the other classes the star performer was undoubtedly Jaimie McCurdy. The 17-year old roared to a hat-trick of wins in Round 4 of the PC Paints & Components World Series for the National Hot Rods.

Another teenage talent tearing up Raceway at the moment is Adam Sloan and the 19-year old from Kells steered his Vauxhall Corsa to the final honours in the Stock Rod division. Joel McPeake romped to a heat and final brace in the Junior Rod category and Jason Clyde took the honours in Round 5 of the GP2 National Series.

Next Meeting

The next action at Ballymena Raceway is pencilled in for Friday September 25. Main events on the programme are the 2015 Irish Championship for the Junior Rods and the Wash’n’Dash SuperCup for the F2 Stock Cars.
