On the 23rd June seven Mixed Martial Arts fighters (also known as MMA and Cage Fighting) from the AVT clubs in Ballycastle and Benvarden will compete in a cage fighting event in the Royal British Legion, Antrim.
Over 300 people are expected to watch the Spartan Promotions event and the AVT team have a strong record to continue after winning two out of two fights both by stoppage at the previous event.
Fighting across a range of weights and categories, the team, under the tutelage of Alan Ashcroft, includes Ryan McIlwee, Chris Gaile, Ruairi McCarthy, Michael Duggan, Jeff Parkhill and Alexander Henry.
Owen Kinney will also be fighting for the promotions Irish lightweight title. The event will be the climax of three months’ hard training for the team in varied disciplines, such as Boxing, Kick-Boxing, Judo, Wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu with all the members being rounded in all of the skills.
As well as that there have been numerous hill sprints, weights lifted, tyres flipped and all round fitness sessions to ensure that the fighters are at their peak.
Alan Ashcroft, head coach said: “This is the biggest team we have taken to an event yet, but each one of the guys is ready to go and I’m confident that we’re going to see a seven out of seven victory return for the club.
The effort has been put in and the skills have been learnt and they’re all looking forward to putting both into action.”
Mixed Martial Arts is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and it combines skills from all ranges of combat disciplines.
New members are always welcome to come and try the sport and the club trains on Mondays in the McAllister Hall, Ballycastle, at 8pm and on Wednesdays and Fridays at 7pm in the Community Hall Benvarden.
