SCORPION’S BOXER LANDS ULSTER TITLE

THE Ballymoney-based Scorpion Boxing Club is toasting success after one of their fighters - 17-year-old Karol Dlugosz - landed an Ulster title following success in the County Antrim championships.

Karol, from Gault Park in Ballymoney studies sport at the Northern Regional College in Coleraine, and he showed some style in bringing the two titles back to Ballymoney and at one stage accounted for a fighter from the Crumlin club who was 13 years his senior.

Karol Dlugosz has been with the Scorpion Club for four years and he was entered into the County Antrim Novice Intermediates at 85kilos (cruiserweight) which is open to fighters aged between 17 and 35.

Karol’s first opponent was Karl Dobbin from the Dockers Club in Belfast in the quarter-finals of Antrim where he produced a blistering body attack in the 2nd round to stop his opponent and progress.

Next up Karol boxed 6’2” Daniel Turley from Ligoniel, a very tall and rangy opponent, but Karol held the centre of the ring and countered each attack and ran out a 16-4 winner to advance to the final

The Antrim final brought Karol a very tough Hungarian opponent, Gabor Lukas from the Crumlin Boxing Club. Gabor was thought to be the favourite by many in attendance, mostly because of age, with Gabor being 30 and the Scorpion man still only 17.

However, Karol had other ideas and was not about to be denied as he delivered his punches in bunches and was coming on strong at the final bell to win 13-6 and capture the County Title.

Karol was then off to the Ulsters and in the final of the Ulster Novice Intermediates he boxed a very tough opponent from Mourne Golden Gloves, Shane McManus.

Shane was no pushover and fought very hard but Karol commanded the centre of the ring and stepped up the tempo in the second half of the fight with excellent head and body attacks to see him win 10-5 and collect the Ulster title.
