Brian’s perfect punch keeps title for Lisburn man

LISBURN’S Brian Magee successfully defended his WBA interim super-middleweight belt against Danish boxer Rudy ‘Hardhitter’ Markussen in Copenhagen on Saturday night after flooring his Danish opponent in the fifth round.

Magee’s left-hook forced the referee to stop the contest, with the scorecards level after the opening four rounds.

The 36-year-old said his opponent was as strong as expected, but believed he had surprised the Dane by standing up to the power.

“That was probably the best body shot I’ve thrown in my career and what a time to throw it” Magee said.

“I just felt my fist sink into his ribs and it was just perfect. Everything came in behind the punch and there was nothing he could do about it.

Prior to Saturday’s fight, both boxers had a record of 24 knock-outs.

Magee now plans to take a couple of weeks off and then get back into training to be ready for another fight at the end of May, when he will be aiming for a full version of the title.
