Biesty’s Ballymoney Youths selected to race for Ulster

Ballymoney Cycling Club Biesty’s Centra Race Team riders and supporters were delighted with the news that on the anniversary of their club sponsor Glenn and Angela Biesty’s 10 Years in the Toon birthday bash, that the club’s youth racers Robbie Doherty Under-16, Arthur Taggart and Shay Donley Under-14 and Rowan Montgomery have been selected to ride for their province at the Errigal International Youth 3 Day race in August.

This event sees the best of the youth racers not only in Ireland but from the UK mainland and Europe race around Churchill in Donegal for three days and four stages.

Ballymoney CC have been working with this purpose in mind to develop and educate their young stars of tomorrow by getting them the experience to take part in this type of quality racing. In the past Arthur Taggart, Robbie Doherty and Shay Donley have represented Ulster with Shay recently representing Ireland at International level in the UK. It is testament to the committment at Ballymoney CC to see a new name, Rowan Montgomery, join the ranks in these international races. Rowan is a National bronze medal winner in last year’s criterium around Ballymoney when 197 other youth riders lined up to share out the Irish medals.

Ballymoney CC take meticulous care in the planning of their club events, to be an advantage to their riders as they let it be known there is a reason behind every type of race on their calendar. With the forming of the neighbouring club Dunloy CC, both these clubs are committed to promoting quality and beneficial racing for both young and old.

Thursday night saw nine Ballymoney CC riders at the tough Dunloy race on the Glenbuck circuit. This was won by club race specialist Stuart Laverty with under 16 Ballymoney CC youth talent Breandan Flannagan getting third and An Post Ras rider Niall O’Hagan fifth, fast improving talent Ryan Wallace seventh and other Under-16 Finn Sands Robinson in eighth. Thank you to Dunloy for their hospitality and support. Heal fast Conor Bradley, as the Dunloy rider got into a spill on the final lap of the race. In the youth race it was Rowan Montgomery and Cameron Wallace heading the field.

Ballymoney CC used a new circuit on Thursday evening and this was a forerunner to the Dervock Civic Week races on Saturday 18th when all local riders will be invited to celebrate a feast of races in the village. This new circuit saw an attempt to encourage all local clubs to take part in what was an opportunity for riders from normally opposing clubs to join forces and ride to help each other. Thank you to Causeway CC, Carn Wheelers, Dunloy, Glens and Ballycastle riders who took part. Fastest on the night were Shane Elder (Carn) and Robert Fleming (Causeway CC) in a time of 21:13.

It is the duty of every cycling coach, mentor enthuasiast to point out talent when it is spotted at an early stage and Ballymoney have another rising talent in the form of Kevin McCambridge.

This young man teamed up with Ballymoney CC ambassador and inspirational rider who recently completed the super tough 8 day An Post Ras, Niall O’Hagan. Despite breaking his pedal and having to stop twice to screw it back on again, Cushendall Under-14 rider Kevin McCambridge battled and rode the only way that he knows, flat out. and he made it to the finish in the runner up fastest time of the evening 21:53.

Local camera man and Ballymoney CC supporter and cycling enthusiast for a “wild lotta years” Mervyn McBride was given a Ballymoney Cycling Club Honorary Life Membership for his services and support for the club. Mervyn’s photograph’s give inspiration and a great deal of pleasure to anyone taking part in the Biesty’s team races. From all at Ballymoney CC Tri, Youth and Race Teams, we want to say thank you Mervyn and welcome on board.
