Oscar-nominated films hitting UK cinemas in February

2018's Oscar nominations have been announced - and a number of this year's biggest contenders are about to land in the UK.

Including three 'Best Picture' nominees.

From dark comedies to coming-of-age dramas, here are five Oscar-nominated films hitting UK cinemas over the coming weeks.

Phantom Thread

What is it? Featuring another immersive, powerhouse performance from Oscar record-holder Daniel Day-Lewis, this story of a fashion designer in '50s Britain re-teams the veteran method actor with There Will Be Blood director Paul Thomas Anderson. Early reviews have praised its captivating use of mood, location and style, and - unsurprisingly - Day-Lewis's nominated central turn.

Roman J Israel Esq

What is it? Denzel Washington has received another Best Actor nod for his gripping portrayal of a complex character. The legal drama comes courtesy of Nightcrawler's Dan Gilroy, so expect similar tension and provocative elements to that excellent, often uncomfortable film.

Loveless

What is it? Russia's Best Foreign-language film nominee comes from the same director as the extraordinary Leviathan, with similarly soul-destroying results. It revolves around an estranged couple who are brought back together when their child goes missing.

What is it? Praised by i's Matthew Turner in his glowing 5-star review, Guillermo del Toro's Cold War fantasy leads the way at the Oscars with a whopping 13 nominations. It stars Sally Hawkins (up for Best Actress) as a mute cleaner in a secret government lab who falls for an imprisoned aquatic creature. As strange as that may sound, the movie has been hailed as a beautiful, gripping blend of poignant romance and '50s sci-fi thriller.

Lady Bird

What is it? Greta Gerwig's debut feature film - which has seen her become only the fifth ever woman to be nominated for Best Director - has been praised for its witty script, realistic comedy drama story-telling and a remarkable lead performance from star Saoirse Ronan. After Brooklyn, the three-times nominated Irish actress seems to be making quality coming-of-age movies a speciality. Here, her Catholic high school girl contends with a complicated Californian existence.

I, Tonya

What is it? Margot Robbie has won rave reviews - and a Best Actress nod - as a figure skater whose rivalry with another athlete turns very bad indeed. Based on a true story, it takes an inventive and darkly humorous approach to a notorious sporting incident.
