With election day fast approaching on 3 November, the US presidential election is nearing its conclusion, and the first debate will take place on Tuesday 29 September.

Republican president Donald Trump will face Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the first of three debates, with the resulting clash expected to be a tense exchange, reflecting the highly divisive nature of the campaign so far.

When will the debate take place?

The debate will take place on Tuesday in Cleveland Ohio, and is expected to start at 9pm Eastern Time in the US, meaning it will be shown at 2am on Wednesday 30 September in the UK.

Can I watch the US presidential debate in the UK?

The debate will be aired on all major US TV networks, as well as on Amazon Fire, Android, Roku and Apple TV services.

For UK viewers, the debate will be shown on CNN, Sky channel 878, for those who have a subscription.

The Washington Post will be showing a live stream of the debate online.

What will the debate be about?

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace will host the debate, with six pre-chosen topics set to make up the bulk of the conversation.

The topics will be the candidate’s respective records, the Supreme Court, the integrity of the election, race and violence in US cities, the economy and Covid-19.

The election comes as the US grapples with a number of crises, including the coronavirus pandemic and heightened racial tensions across the country which have led to protests and violent clashes between various groups.

Donald Trump has attracted controversy and caused alarm among the international community for seeming to suggest at various points in the campaign that he may not accept the results of the election.

The 74-year-old incumbent, who has come under intense scrutiny this week following the publication of an investigation into his tax affairs, is currently narrowly behind in most polls.

Democratic nominee Joe Biden is a long-serving US politician, best known for his role as vice-president under Barack Obama. He has attracted criticism during the campaign for failing to set out a clear platform.

Both candidates have suffered gaffes and blunders during live media appearances recently, with some speculating as to whether either is up to the task of the presidency.

If elected, Joe Biden would be the oldest person to assume the presidency, after Donald Trump became the oldest president following his election in 2016.
