Woman's behaviour described as '˜disgraceful'

A 55-year-old woman was fined £200 last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court for common assault on a woman.

Margaret Rowntree, South Street, Portadown, was also ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that on October 5 last year the injured party reported to police that the defendant had punched her in the chest and face. Rowntree admitted that she slapped the woman but denied punching her.

A defending barrister said the parties were known to each other. He added that she had never been in court before except for a speeding matter and she was apologetic. This was out of character.

Deputy District Judge Gerry Trainor said that in the injured party’s statement she claimed a clenched fist was used and this connected with her nose and right cheek.

The judge told Rowntree her behaviour in a public place was disgraceful.
