Christine Doherty, Derry City Council’s Biodiversity Officer, explained: “This competition promotes the creation of attractive and welcoming gardens for wildlife and people, as well as highlighting recycling initiatives.”

“The gardens will be judged on the range of garden features that support wildlife (nest boxes, bird tables, ponds or log piles), a variety of native trees, plants and flowers that provide a sustainable food source and refuge for wildlife.

“We will also be keen to see the creative use of natural resources (making compost, creative recycling and the collection and use of rain water).”

This competition is part of the ‘Do One Thing’ for nature campaign, funded by Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Derry City Council.
