Bi-lingualism on rise in Londonderry schools

Lisnagelvin PS and the Good Shepherd PS are the most bi-lingual in Londonderry outside the Irish medium sector.

Over 40 pupils at the schools do not have either English or Irish as their first language.

Oakgrove PS and St Mary’s PS, Strabane, have between 31 and 40 such pupils, whilst the Model and St Oliver Plunkett’s have between 20 and 30.

According to the Education Minister 5.7 per cent of Primary children in Northern Ireland are now non-native speakers.
