Tough calls for Carrickfergus in Bloom panel
Deborah Walker took first prize in the Best Kept Container Garden category of the annual event, the winners of which were announced this week at her Carrick home.
Alderman May Beattie, chairperson of the Parks, Countryside and Amenities sub-committee, said: “We have been really impressed with the quality and diversity of the entries to the competition this year. It has been an opportunity for me to see the wealth and variety of horticultural talent we have in our borough.”

Hide AdStephen Daye, Parks and Countryside development officer and one of the judges, added: “The quality of the entries this year has been impressive, the time and dedication many entrants spend in their gardens is a credit to them. Deciding on the winners is difficult and the marks can be very close, all who took part should be proud of their achievements.”

Best Kept Community Planting Scheme: winner - Brighter Whitehead; runners-up - Carrickfergus Traders Association, Charles Sheils Charity, Wesley Court Residents Group. Best Kept Allotment (sponsored by Sunnybank Garden Centre): winner - Richard Williamson, Carrick; runners-up - Godfrey Robinson, Carrick, Colin McManus, Carrick.
Best Commercial Premises: winner - The Courtyard, Carrick; runners-up - Manor Senior Living, Carrick, The Bank House, Whitehead. Best Kept Café, Pub or Hotel: winner - Ownies’ Bar & Bistro, Carrick; runners-up - Hillcrest Bed & Breakfast, Carrick, The Old Tea House, Whitehead.
