PSNI Traffic Management representatives have advised that they don’t anticipate any road closures as the Olympic Torch Relay passes through Moyle District Council on Sunday June 3rd in the host villages and towns of Glenariff, Cushendall, Ballycastle and Bushmills.
The Torch relay times are as follows: Glenariffe 3.17pm – 3.42pm - Garron Road-Coast Road; Cushendall 4.05pm – 4.14pm - Coast Road-Mill Street; Ballycastle 4.48pm – 5.07pm - Mary Street-Moyarget Road; Bushmills 5.41pm – 6.07pm - Castlecatt Rd-Dunluce Road.
An Activation Convoy will arrive in each of the four areas between 30mins – 60mins ahead of the Torch Relay Convoy. The Activation Convoy will consist of sponsors Lloyds TSB, Samsung and Coca Cola. Promotional staff will mingle with the crowd and hand out memorabilia. Therefore it is advised that you should arrive at least one hour before the projected time that the Torch is due to pass through each area, in order to ensure a viewing position along the Relay Route.
It is anticipated that traffic will be moving in both directions and coming up behind the convoy. Where there are tight single lane traffic conditions in both directions, traffic will be directed to slow and pause on the side of the road whilst the Relay Convoy passes through. This may vary if there is a large flow of traffic but it is anticipated that temporary road closures will not be in place.
Each area has a number of events and festivities taking place throughout the day, visit www.moyle-council.org for further details. Brochures with further details are also available in local shops and venues. This could lead to slow movement of traffic in the host areas.
If road closures are required they will be rolling road closures that will only take place for the duration of the actual Torch Relay. After the convoy passes roads will return to two way flow.
There will be designated parking areas, with allocation for Blue Badge Holders. On street parking will be severely restricted on the day and local people are encouraged to leave their cars at home where possible. Stewards will be on hand to provide further information on the day. The message from organisers is arrive early, on foot where possible, in order to ensure that ‘Our Moment to Shine’ is a fun filled experience for all!
