Mr Robin Swann, the North Antrim Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, has welcomed the written commitment from his party colleague and Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy to earmark funds to improve roads on Rathlin Island.
In his response to Assemblyman Swann, Minister Kennedy said: “I am looking positively at improving road conditions on the island and intend to make some funding available to help improve the roads in Rathlin.
“My officials are currently considering this issue and the extent of the work that could be undertaken.
“I have asked my officials to programme the work for this financial year, subject to weather conditions and the probable procurement of an additional ferry to accommodate the contractor’s plant,” Minister Kennedy told Mr Swann.
Mr Swann added: “Rathlin plays an important role in the overall tourism industry in North Antrim so this road improvement project is to be warmly welcomed.
“Equally importantly, it will also benefit the islanders themselves in travelling around Rathlin.
“Rathlin also has a significant part in studying wildlife, flora and fauna in an island context. The improved roads scheme will ensure that any future research will be assisted by easier and more safer access to these areas,” said Assemblyman Swann.
