Support in Coleraine and Ballymoney

Support groups for people caring for someone with dementia are run regularly by the Alzheimer’s Society in Coleraine and Ballymoney.

These sessions offer people caring for someone with dementia the chance to learn more about the disease and how it affects the individual in a series of courses being run by Alzheimer’s Society throughout the year.

The groups aim to help carers understand more about the condition and its symptoms, including the sort of behaviours that people may display which can at

times be challenging.

By understanding more about dementia the groups help people to cope better with caring for the individual.

Olive Watt, carer who attends support groups, said: “I like to bring Bill to meet with his friends and I also get to meet carers in the same

situation as myself.

“The group is a great support to me, is fun and also helps me with difficult situations I face as a carer.

“Within the group there is a great sense of acceptance and understanding.

“Sharing our experiences and hearing other people’s experiences is a great support, stops me feeling isolated and I also learn a lot from the meetings to aid my caring role.”

Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Worker, Helen Taylor said: “Understanding how a person with dementia is trying to make sense of the world, and

how they feel about the losses they are experiencing, can help relatives to be more patient and cope better.

“This, in turn, helps the person with dementia to be more content.

“The support group will also help people to better understand the changes that occur as dementia progresses and there will be the opportunity for carers to discuss the difficulties they face and what tactics work for them.

“These are very friendly groups who are very welcoming to any new participants.”
