After recent negative images of Dervock and the potential impact it could have within the village, the true spirit of the community sparkled on Saturday.
Through the medium of sport and music it welcomed musicians, entertainers, runners, food stalls, cyclists and visitors from America, New Zealand, Scotland, North Down, Tyrone, Ballymena to the village in the annual Festival of Running in memory of KK McArthur - the Dervock Olympian (Marathon) Gold Medallist in 1912.
Dervock FC brought the village together by winning the League and Shield double as visitors witnessed rapturous scenes as the village celebrated again – confirming that sport is a necessary conduit to develop community relationships within the village and from communities outside as well.
Frank McLernon (Coordinator) wished to thank several groups including: Stranocum LOL 749, Raynet, St John Ambulance, Roseyards Presbyterian Church, Stranocum & District Development Group, PSNI (traffic management), Causeway Coast & Glens Council (Community Festival Fund), DDADCA Ltd Co, Smak/Maine Minerals, Robinson Bros Concrete Products (Claudy & Ballymoney), J.L.S. Frank added: “We are a proud village, let’s work together to make our village, our community the envy of every other town and village in the province. The village has an unchallenged legacy of sport and cultural history.”
Well done Dervock.
