Skin diseaseresearched

Professor Irwin McLean, originally from Dervock, is currently professor of Human Genetics at the University of Dundee and, with a team of 35, is currently leading research into incurable the rare skin disorder Pachyonychia Congenita (PC).

The disorder affects children from early infancy, causing very painful skin blistering and thickening, which lasts throughout their lifetime.

Professor Irwin is recognised as a leadingauthority on skin conditions and has been consultant on Channel 4’s series Embarrassing Bodies.

Now Professor McLean’s family are organising a number of fundraisers to support the research.

His sister Rosemary Allen from Balnamore is holding an afternoon tea in the Social Centre, Edward Street in Ballymoney on June 22 from 3 - 6pm to raise money.

Assisted by daughter-in-law Coral Allen, the event will also feature bric-a-brac, cakes for sale, car boot and crafts. Admission free.

Brothers Bob and Redmond McLean are also appealing for old car batteries and old metal which they can convert into cash to fund the research.

“The family are all getting behind him to help support him in his work,” said sister Rosemary.
