Sarah joins the charity fight club

ACCOUNTS Manager Sarah Wilkinson is chomping at the bit to jab and uppercut her way to victory at White Collar Boxing Night on 25th March at Kelly's Complex, Portrush, writes Helen Evans.

White Collar Boxing is a type of sport where men and women in white collar professions train to fight at special events.

Most of them have no boxing experience. It first became popular in New York during the mid-1990s with bouts lasting three two-minute rounds.

Sarah learnt about the event from Local Women magazine which urged people from local businesses to take part. Hosted by NI Live Events, competitors will receive eight weeks of training before the big night. There will be a full live five camera video mix during the event and more than 1000 tickets are expected to be sold.

A keen reader of the magazine, Sarah's primary reason for taking part is to raise money for the Children With Cancer Fund. She is also excited about 'kick-starting' a new fitness regime for 2011.

Sarah said,"I am keen to start training and looking forward to getting in the ring. Although I am a little apprehensive, I am looking forward to raising money for a good cause. I'm not scared but I am concerned about how time consuming training will be. There will be a lot of people watching which should motivate me even more to do well. However, I will certainly not be doing any fancy footwork, I just want to stay on my feet!"

In preparation for her first training session she has been attending Indoor Cycling at Causeway Route 2 Fitness with Jemma McLaughlin. However, before then she must attend a medical check on 18th January.

Sarah added,"I am hoping to gain a lot from this experience. I want to enjoy training and become fitter. I think it's an amazing opportunity to get people together and make new friends.

"My friends and family have given me outstanding support and sponsorship for the Children With Cancer Fund. I also want to thank Orbit House Furnishers, Super Bites and Michelle Parkhill from the Legion for their generous donations.

Moreover, there are a lot of sponsors that I hope to hear from soon. I am raising money for such a good cause and I hope to raise as much as possible."
