Rasharkin is on a roll!

On Tuesday 7th August, a party of 34 members of the Rasharkin Community Youth Project braced themselves for an adrenaline-packed adventure at The Jungle NI in Moneymore.

Having surfed and coasteered already this summer, this intrepid bunch of young people were totally geared up for the challenge of zorbing (rolling down a steep hill in a sphere), paint-balling and archery.

As an active youth forum (supported by the Northern Ireland Youth Forum), the group spent the morning running elections for office-bearer posts. Speeches were given by those standing for leadership positions and ballot papers were completed : the elections were hotly contested, with all candidates showing their skills for handling the challenges of public speaking. A rapid count of the papers was followed by cheers as the office-bearer names were revealed. With 9 roles filled (including exciting project manager positions for some of the project key strands : an innovative art project, a living history project ~ which includes film-making, a fund-raising project and a PR-communications project) the group were ready to celebrate the morning’s achievements.

Shouts of “unreal!” were to be heard emerging from the rolling spheres as RCYP project members threw themselves into the zorbing experience. No amount of rain could dampen their spirits as they screamed their way down the hill!

“It’s a privilege to work with this group of young people,” said Jane Talbot, the RCYP Project Manager. “They have really thrown themselves into the project and are not shy about taking on responsibility. I am really looking forward to working with them on the next stages of the project.”

Sounds like they’re on a roll!
