Rachel wins Diana Courageous Citizen Award

DRUMREAGH Presbyterian Church Girls’ Brigade member Rachel Scott has been awarded the Diana Courageous Citizen Award at a ceremony in Parliament Buildings.

16-year-old Rachel received the award from Stormont Minister Nelson McCausland for her approach to life and her impact in the lives of others.

Rachel was nominated for the award by her GB leader Valerie Hamilton.

Speaking about the nomination, Valerie said: “I first heard about the Diana Award at a meeting in GBHQ. I didn’t give it much thought at first and then Rachel’s name was planted in my mind. I looked up the Diana Award website and read through some of the criteria and Rachel’s name still kept popping into my head, so I thought yes, I will give this a go.

“Rachel has been in and out of hospital with a disease that she will have all her life. She hardly ever misses a GB night and has completed her work for her Queen’s Award - the highest award in GB which she will be receiving in 2014.

“Rachel did all this even though she was obviously not well at times. Her enthusiasm and dedication are an inspiration to me as a GB leader.”
