Police issue warning on traffic issues Portrush

POLICE in Portrush are urging motorists to show more consideration to residents living in the Bushmills Road area of the town during the early hours of the morning after licensed premises in the area close.

Neighbourhood Sergeant, Sharon Campbell said, “We have recently received complaints from residents in Bushmills Road concerning motorists who park in private entrances, laneways and on footpaths in the area between 1am and 2:30am after local licensed premises close for the evening.

“In addition to revving engines and householders being woken from their sleep the number of vehicles parking in this short stretch of road is also causing an obstruction and interfering with the general flow of traffic.

“This in turn has created a road safety issue as available space on both the footpaths and the carriageway is restricted at a time when many people are seeking to cross the road in order to get their bus or taxi home.

“It also makes it more difficult for patrons travelling by car to exit from the premises onto the Bushmills Road.”

Sgt Campbell added: “There is ample space available at nearby car parks and I would urge motorists to make full use of these facilities both as a place to wait to collect people and as a means of reducing the traffic congestion.

“I would also remind motorists that private entrances must be kept clear at all times to allow access by the police, ambulance and the Fire And Rescue Service.”

Police patrols will be paying attention to the area in the weeks ahead and if motorists continue to cause an obstruction they should expect to receive a 30 fixed penalty notice.”
