Mr Coulter, who was born in the Whiteabbey area in 1912, played for a number of teams including Belfast Celtic, Everton, Grimsby Town, Swansea and Linfield.

He also won 11 caps for Ireland in the 1930s.

Now Rob Sawyer of the Everton FC Heritage Society is hoping to find out some additional information about the winger for an article he is producing.

Speaking to the Newtownabbey Times, Mr Sawyer said: “John ‘Jackie’ Coulter (1910-1981) starred on the left wing for Belfast Celtic, Everton FC, Grimsby Town and Ireland in the 1930s. Returning to his homeland with the outbreak of war, he played for several teams before moving into scouting with Manchester City. He lived for many years in Newtownabbey.

“Jackie was married in Carrickfurgus and lived in Newtownabbey in his later years, having returned from England.

“I am writing an article to celebrate Jackie’s life in football and I am seeking assistance from family members or anyone else who may have met or known this gifted footballer.”
