Pensioners’ fuel poverty burden

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan described the latest report from the Pensioners’ Parliament as ‘grim reading.’

Mr McMullan said: “Over 50 per cent of pensioners are still having to cut back on essentials to pay for heating. I am also concerned that pensioners here who rely on oil are paying on average over £400 per year more that than those pensioners in Britain. This is a huge financial burden. Pensioners in Britain and the rest of Ireland are also entitled to an allowance towards their electricity bills while that allowance is not available here.”
