Parkmore traffic calming measures welcomed

TRAFFIC calming measures are to be introduced at Parkmore, Magherafelt in an effort to reduce speeding motorists.

The estate is regularly used by motorists as a short cut from Ballyronan Road to the Moneymore Road.

The entire area will become a 20mph zone marked by gateway signage and red surfacing at the entrance points.

Seven speed cushions will also be constructed when work starts, probably over the summer months.

Translink had called for the removal of a traffic island in the centre of the estate in order to improve the town bus service.

However, a recent survey of householders, revealed that a majority of them are in favour of keeping the island which was erected to prevent large lorries using the estate as a through road.

Members of Magherafelt District Council approved the proposals when they came before them at their monthly meeting last week.

Welcoming the measures, DUP Councillor Anne Forde said they were needed to deter the speed of some vehicles.

“The residents didn’t want the traffic island removed as it was effective in preventing large vehicles using the estate,” she said.

“I would welcome the proposals and express the hope that they will have the desired impact of reducing the speed of cars.”

Traffic calming cushions are also proposed for Westland Road and Highfield Road in the town and these are expected to be in place later in the year.
