'No police bias' at Carey

A POLICE chief has said the only reason PSNI checks are being carried out in the Carey area near Ballycastle is because Roads Service counting devices showed there have been some "horrendous" speeds in the area.

Inspector Bryan Hume was reacting to comments made by Independent councillor Paudie McShane at a meeting of Moyle Council.

The councillor said the PSNI is “stopping twice a week in Ballyvoy” and he added: “I would hate to think it was for anything else other than speeding traffic”.

The councillor said he had asked for traffic calming measures around Barnish Primary School at Ballyvoy.

Roads Service Principal Engineer Terry Fulton said they had looked at the area and the scoring system they use showed it was not as urgent a scheme as other areas.

He said that did not mean something will be done at Barnish but said it will be a lower priority.

That prompted Cllr McShane to ask: “Why would the PSNI be stopping at the Chapel if there is no issue with accidents?”

The Roads Service chief said he could only comment on his own behalf.

Inspector Hume told the Times there was no discrimination against any area of Moyle and that the only reason police are in Carey is because traffic counting devices have shown some very big speeds.
