No-one is invinciblein face of drug use

HUNDREDS of Londonderry post-primary pupils were told they are not invincible and how the misuse of drugs can damage prospects and health, at a recent drug awareness event in the city.

The drug awareness event at St Columb’s College was organised by the Londonderry District Policing Partnership (DPP) and attended by pupils from Thornhill College, Lisneal College, St. Joseph’s Boys School, St. Mary’s College, Foyle and Londonderry High School, Saint Cecilia’s College, Oakgrove Integrated College and St Brigid’s College.

Pupils heard presentations from PSNI and DIVERT on the harmful effects of drug misuse on the person, family and community.

Pupils were then able to question the PSNI Area Commander, DPP members and representatives from DIVERT on the issue.

DPP Chairperson Thomas Conway said: “This engagement event with our young people was a really positive exercise and I would commend all those pupils who attended.

“From the feedback received during the session it is obvious that our young people appreciate the information provided on the dangers associated with drug misuse and will now be in a position to make informed decisions.

“The will also be aware of the support groups available to deal with this issue”.

Declan McLaughlin from DIVERT stated: “We need to provide relevant information to our young people in order that they are aware of the dangers and make the right choices.

“Young adults frequently feel invincible but the misuse of drugs can often result in death and devastation for family and friends.”

PSNI Constable Michael Gahan, City North Neighbourhood Team, added: “Drug dealers don’t care about our young people or the harmful effects of what they are selling.

“Getting mixed up with drugs at an early age can jeopardise your career and education prospects as well as your physical and mental health.

“We see real value in using every opportunity to engage with the youth sector on the tough issues like drugs. The better informed our young people are, the easier it will be for them to make the right choices about their futures.”
