Man in court on terrorism charges

A 39-year-old man has appeared in court in Craigavon on terrorism charges.

Gabriel Martin Aloysius Mackle, from Glebe Hill Manor in Tandragee, was stopped by police while he was riding a motorbike in Lurgan on Wednesday.

The court heard officers found 20 rounds of ammunition and a bottle containing liquid mercury in a rucksack he was wearing.

A detective said liquid mercury could be used as part of a trigger mechanism for an under-car booby trap bomb.

The detective told the court that the accused had refused to speak throughout two days of questioning.

Bail was refused and Mr Mackle will appear again via video link in next month
