Ladies lead the way in shaping a better future

An audience of 60 ladies ranging in age from 18 to 81 years gathered at Corr’s Corner Hotel recently for the latest event in the ‘Leading Ladies’ programme.

As part of the programme, which is funded by the CAN PEACE III Partnership, the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley-Mooney and Director of Include Youth, Koulla Yiasouma had been invited along to share their personal and professional journeys and their own understanding of “building positive relations.”

The rights of children and young people were the common theme, and the importance of both teaching and protecting those rights.

Ms Lewsley-Mooney talked about young people feeling excluded from making decisions which affect them and about the unseen ripple effect of policy reform on children.

Ms Yiasouma stressed the importance of protecting childhood and of not judging people by what they are, but rather by who they are.

Speaking after the event, Councillor Noreen McClelland, Vice-chair of the CAN (Carrickfergus, Antrim & Newtownabbey) PEACE III Partnership commented: “Yet again, I am delighted at the turnout for our Leading Ladies event, and once again the evening has been encouraging and thought provoking. I was particularly struck by the Commissioner’s comment ‘If we are serious about shaping a better future, we should listen to our young people’. This is an important challenge to all of us whether working in the public, or the community and voluntary sectors.”

The Leading Ladies programme will continue in September with a range of engaging and inspirational speakers.
