Green bank inNI plea

LONDONDERRY SDLP MP Mark Durkan has sought assurances from Business Secretary Vince Cable that the new Green Investment Bank (GIB) will be open and accessible to schemes in Northern Ireland as well as to cross-border projects on the island.

Mr Durkan, questioned the Business Secretary in the House of Commons last week after the publication of plans for the world’s first bank dedicated to the greening of the economy.

He said: “I welcome the progress that is reflected in Vince Cable’s statement and hope we can rely on much of their promise.

“I sought assurances from the Business Secretary that schemes here in the North and cross-border projects on the island would be eligible to apply to the new Green Investment Bank.

“Past experience has shown that Whitehall and Belfast have both failed to incentivise green enterprise here by a failure to accommodate or support cross-border projects.”
